I visited Hyde Park in Sydney, for the first time in my life, on the same day, unbeknownst to me, that 'Chucky' Rudd announced the wreck of the first HMAS Sydney had been discovered - St Patrick's Day 2008.



HMAS Sydney Memorial

A gun commandeered from the German light cruiser, SMS Emden commemorates HMAS Sydney's dispatching of the troublesome Emden on 9 11 1914.

In an eery rehashing of the date numbers, her namesake was herself sunk - with all hands (645 souls - by the heavily-armed German merchant raider Kormoran, disguised as a Dutch merchant, just off Shark Bay, Western Australia on 19 11 1941.

"It was the biggest ship lost with no survivors from any World War Two nation, historians said, vanishing after sailing ablaze over the horizon at the end of the encounter."
