There is little doubt that the hierarchy of the Nazi party was adept in manipulating public opinion and had raised propaganda to an art form, particularly using the talents of Dr. Joseph Goebels. The construction of the Albert Speer designed ‘Cathedral of Light’ in Berlin in which to hold great political rallies was one of the great masterstrokes of the prevailing ethos. Did the pageantry of the ceremonies replete with quasi-magical symbolism and martial music wean the already embryonic ideology present in the assembled masses? Is it possible that the deliberate use of pulsating music and rhythms, a technique deliberately used in shamanic rituals, coupled with the ceremonial marching, trigger an elevated or altered state of consciousness in the assembled audience? Did the fevered, impassioned rhetoric of the Fuehrer, Adolph Hitler serve to further heighten the susceptibility of the throng? Was there, in effect, a form of real magic present there, magic created in the subconscious minds of those present, whipping them into a passion of unquestioning fervour for the benefit of the Nazi party and its rabidly nationalistic ideals? Based on what is now known about the psychological effects of sound and light, both positive and negative, on crowd control this cannot easily be discounted.

The Grail Quest

As with many ancient and legendary quests, the search for three powerful biblical artefacts, The Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant and The Spear of Destiny, have become lodged within human awareness as unobtainable symbols enshrined in half remembered, half understood scripture. Over the centuries these quests have been popularised in various ways, perhaps the earliest was the grail romance ‘Parsival’ by Wolfram Von Eschenbach, continuing through the works of Richard Wagner including ‘Lohengrin,’ and his operatic version of ‘Parsival’, both of which featured the ‘Spear of Destiny.’ More recently this trend has continued in motion pictures, notably ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and ‘The Last Crusade’.

Traditionally, the Ark of the Covenant was of course the receptacle designed to hold the tablets of the Ten Commandments given by God to Moses on Mt Sinai. The Spear of Destiny, alternatively known both as the St. Maurice spear and the Spear of Longinus, also incorporates a nail supposedly from the ‘true cross’ held in place by gold, silver and copper strands. Finally, the Grail was the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper and as the receptacle held by Joseph of Arimathea to gather the blood of Christ as it flowed from his tortured, agonised body on the cross. It has also been conjectured that the grail may not refer to an inanimate object at all, but instead to the womb of Mary Magdalene whilst pregnant with Christ’s child. This originates from possible mistranslations of medieval documents. The seminal detective work conducted by Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln in their book ‘The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail’ mentions that the Holy Grail was repeatedly described as the ‘Sangraal’ or ‘Sangreal’. It also goes on to suggest that this was divided into two words, not as first perceived ‘San Graal,’ or Holy Grail, but instead ‘Sang Real’ or Blood Royal.

All of this is of course speculation as the authors freely admit, but the pieces do fit very well, perhaps too well. None of this information was readily available, at least not openly available prior to1982 and certainly not in the years preceding 1939 when the Nazi party assembled its forces in an attempt to bring Europe and ultimately the world under it’s heel. It was during this period that Adolph Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Rudolph Hess and many other high-ranking Nazi party leaders attempted to assemble certain biblical artefacts in their quest for ultimate power both temporal and spiritual. They planned to unlock the occult power assumed to be stored in The Ark of the Covenant, the Spear of Longinus and The Holy Grail. As a result of this desire, a series of genuine and lengthy searches were launched for these artefacts. The Spear of Longinus was a relatively simple matter, traditionally in the custody of the Hapsburg Dynasty it’s hereditary keepers, it already lay on display in the Hofburg Treasure House in Vienna. However, the other two items were rather more daunting, particularly the Holy Grail. This of course begs the question, would it matter if the items were genuine or not, or does the supposed power lie in the belief itself? To give an insight into this burning desire for power and influence above the merely physical, it is both necessary and helpful to take a necessarily brief look both at certain beliefs prevalent in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century and their influence upon the main architects of the Nazi regime.

The Societies

In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, a variety of secret occult societies operated in Germany, the most influential were, The Bavarian Illuminati, The Freemasons, The Rosicrucians, The Thule Society and The Vril Society. Each of these five societies although founded in secrecy and mysticism had its own unique role and function. Of these five, two were especially noted for their occult connections, The Vril Society and The Thule Society. The chief architect of the Thule Society, the occultist Rudolf Glauer, also known as Baron Rudolph von Sebottendorff, possessed a wide knowledge of Islamic mysticism, particularly the Dervish sects who practise a form of Sufism, which differs markedly from mainstream Islamic teaching.

Thule

An offshoot of the earlier secret society, the ‘German Order’, the name Thule refers to the capital of a legendary polar country, Hyperborea. Also referred to as ‘Ultima Thule’, it was supposedly the gateway to another world. Thule was therefore recognised as a place where humans could by whatever means leave the earth; it also reputedly stood at the portal of the ‘hollow Earth’. Interestingly, the major players in the 20th century, the USA and the Russian Federation have ELF - extra low frequency - transmitters sited in this area. submarines, but worryingly, they broadcast these communications at brain-wave frequencies of around 18 to 20Hz. Traditionally, the Hyperboreans were in regular contact with extraterrestrial and other alien cultures, in some versions of this there was alleged interbreeding. In common with the legendary inhabitants of Atlantis, they engaged in war with neighbouring civilisations. This eventually escalated into the use of atomic weapons, resulting in a Pyrrhic victory for the Hyperboreans, who, as well as defeating their enemies, virtually destroyed themselves in the process. In common with radiation damage witnessed in recent times, the surviving Hyperboreans were soon faced with the prospect of mutated and otherwise damaged offspring. Showing remarkable pragmatism, those who had not sustained any apparent genetic damage banded together and effectively removed themselves from the gene pool, a variety of self-

imposed quarantine. Any ‘damaged’ offspring from the group were neutered at birth but otherwise normally treated. This early example of eugenics was practised until they were sure that any defective genes had been bred out, the other mutated and largely sterile group eventually died out, naturally although whether they were ‘assisted’ in this, is open to debate. This may seem like, and indeed is, a harsh, clinical line to adopt, but faced with the gradual, inexorable extinction of their entire race, they had little other option.

The descendants of this seminal ‘mother race’ were the Celts, who like the ripples on a pond, spread out, colonising various northern areas of the planet. The Scots, Irish, Basques, Spanish, Scandinavians, Icelanders and the Portuguese, all these peoples are of Celtic origin. These disparate nationalities have one common genetic trait, a large percentage of Rh-negative blood types, which, according to the beliefs of the Thule society was a characteristic of the Hyperboreans and their extraterrestrial associates. In recent times, the majority of alien abductees are reportedly from RH negative blood groups, is this a possible indication that UFO cultures are tracking their cross-bred progeny? Other races and peoples who posses a positive blood type were considered to be racially impure, as positive blood is thought to be contaminated by contact with the primate evolved strand of human DNA.

Vril

The name ‘Vril’ is, according to which version of the story you read, either the Atlantean language, which, atypically, was composed of sounds and clicks, similar in form to the communication used by dolphins. This explanation segues with the theory that humanity is descended from aquatic and reptilian origins, however, the other explanation posits that Vril describes a type of esoteric energy. The Vril society itself was founded in the city of Vienna in 1917 by a group of four people, one of whom, a medium, claimed to channel information, (which included the magical, violet, ‘black stone’ comprising the ‘Sphere of Destiny’), directly from extraterrestrials. The source of this Vril power was the ‘Black Sun’, which is described as being ‘an invisible beam of infinite light’. The Black Sun itself was a millennia old secret school of philosophical thought and allegedly the foundation on which the occult beliefs of the Nazi Third Reich were founded; Heinrich Himmler was allegedly an adept of this ancient doctrine.

The Rest

As for the Rosicrucians, the Bavarian Illuminati and the Freemasons, although all nominally occult and had varying degrees of influence on German society, of the three, only the Freemasons were widespread outwith Germany and indeed Europe, had much influence on society as a whole. The culture encouraged among the Masonic order was in any case inimical to Nazi doctrines and as such led to their banning by Hitler. The Illuminati, who along with the Freemasons are supposedly the driving force behind the ‘New World Order’, (a super secret and powerful group much loved by conspiracy theorists everywhere) were largely a spent force and did not threaten Nazi doctrines. The Rosicrucians likewise were not perceived as a direct threat to the regime and were largely ignored.

The Outcome

For all his perceived power and influence, with his thousand year Reich finally lying in flames and rubble around him, when Adolph Hitler died in 1945, it was, perhaps fittingly, without dignity. He was crippled with Parkinson’s disease and trapped in a dank, stinking, overcrowded and unsanitary bunker beneath the streets of Berlin. He almost certainly did not shoot himself, nor did he take cyanide, his end appears to have come through strangulation at the hands of his valet. Whether or not he possessed powers outwith human understanding that were actually invoked in furtherance of the Nazi ideal cannot be conclusively proved, however there were clear signs that Hitler viewed both himself and his mission as messianic in nature. It is also clear that there were those close to Hitler that did attempt to invoke unearthly powers to aid them in their lust for power and domination. It is equally clear that they did not succeed although it does not reflect well upon the victors that they were willing to ignore horrendous crimes against humanity when they recruited Nazi scientists, doctors and technicians under the auspices of schemes like 'Operation Paperclip’. As a result of this personnel were recruited from weapons programmes to assist in the development of Russian and American domestic weapons programmes. Incredible as it may seem, it has since come to light that the British were willing to grant Heinrich Himmler immunity from his heinous role in the callous and inhuman

treatment of the Jews and others not deemed fit to live in the brave new Nazi world. This immunity was evidently dependent on two things, one was his intended role in the reconstruction of post war Germany and the other was his control, via the SS, of huge swathes of the German industrial base. Intriguingly, detailed forensic investigation now shows that Himmler may not in fact have committed suicide after capture by the allies, although someone certainly did. In line with his illicit control of German manufacturing industry and the apparent willingness of the victors to overlook his part in the Holocaust perhaps he did slip into obscurity in return for his detailed knowledge.

Whether or not there was any genuine invocation of the forces of evil to assist the Nazi machine depends on how one views evil. Is it an external and separate entity or is it an integral element of humanity lying buried under a surface veneer of civilised behaviour? One opinion suggest that evil is inherent in mans makeup and only requires the necessary environment and encouragement to emerge. There is however also a school of thought that considers evil and wickedness to exist as part of a demonic discrete ‘otherness’ outwith the mainstream of humanity, continually waiting to sunder the walls of civilised society and explode, shrieking its malevolence into consciousness and human history. Whatever the ultimate source of evil, be it internal or external to the human condition, there is one terrifying thought; its final seat of residence is in the human mind.
